RIVER CRUISING

RIVER CRUISING

“A river cruise represents life in the slow lane, sailing along at a gentle pace, soaking up the scenery, with plentiful opportunities to explore riverside towns and cities en route………”
 – Douglas Ward
Several River Cruise lines now offer tours in many parts of the world with the most popular being Europe, however your choices now cover such rivers as.
• Africa         - Nile
• Americas  - Mississippi, Peruvian Amazon
• Asia            - Mekong, Yangtze, Ganga, Irrawaddy, Brahmaputra
• Australia   - Murray
• Europe      - Seine, Volga, Danube, Rhine, The main, Moselle, Elbe

River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy tale towns and fabled cities. Immerse yourself in contemporary culture, and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent’s greatest rivers. You could go further than Europe, and cruise Ancient Egypt’s highway; the Nile; see temples, pyramids and the timeless tapestry of daily life unfolding on its banks. In fact, a cruise is the ideal way to see Egypt’s ancient wonders, or maybe sail the mighty Mekong and do a side trip to Angkor Wat.

So why choose a River cruise

Most river cruises have a maximum of 100-200 passengers. River cruising consists of three main activities: dining, cruising and touring. You can admire the passing scenery from your cabin balcony if you have one or from the ships lounge with its extensive windows or on the sun deck with 360 degree panoramas. It’s an unforgettable intimate travel experience as you sail quietly down the river in your luxury floating hotel watching the scenery drift past. Best of all river cruises include drinks served with meals, most shore excursions and some include all of your drinks all excursions and gratuities in the up-front price you pay, so a full all-inclusive feature.

Life onboard a river cruise will include some evening entertainment and on occasion, local performers will board the ship to entertain you. There are talks and lectures, wine and cheese and cooking demonstrations to enrich your river cruise experience.

River itineraries are a lot more port intensive, you could be visiting a different destination every day, sometimes two in a day as travelling between stops is not a great distance. You will see land at all times on a River cruise and are in port daily. Most stops are right in the heart of the town, you can literally stroll off the ship and you’ll be there. The main purpose for river cruising is to tour various towns, cities and ports along the river banks. There is a fair amount of walking on a river cruise during informative walking tours but there is also free time to roam the port towns. And if you like biking, most ships will carry bikes on board for you to ride into town or from one port to the next.

Cabins can be slightly smaller than the large ocean suites, but still beautifully decorated and very comfortable; all with a window or balcony, and you will not find any inside cabins on a river ship.

Each river offers something different as does each cruise operator, there are many different itineraries including the very popular Christmas market cruise on the Rhine or Danube with a wealth of festive sights sounds, fragrances and flavours but plan early these Christmas market cruises sell out fast.

River cruising has become extremely popular with ships booking up a year in advance so if river cursing is something you’ve been thinking of be sure to start planning early.
